I Don’t Want to Go to Rehab in October

Of course you don’t want to go or be in rehab in October. The weather is cooling down, people are out and about shopping for fall clothes, couples walk through the park, farmers watch their crops begin to fade, and where are you? You may not think it now, but you are on an deep and important personal quest.

You might be thinking, What? A personal quest? I have a stupefying addiction, I’ve alienated my family and friends, I’ve done things I regret and am ashamed of, and I’m depressed. While this state of mind may be accurate and true for you today, going to a rehab can ignite a new beginning. The information you gather about addiction, and the work you do, can change the way you feel about yourself and offer opportunities for a fulfilling life.

Going to a rehab is one of the best methods to combat craving for alcohol and or opioids. Craving doesn’t stop the minute you walk through the door. It takes time for your mind and body to repair the neuro pathways that set off craving. When the alcohol and drugs are omitted for a period of time, the craving will subside.

Healing takes time, and it is usually necessary to look beyond the actual addiction to find clues and reasons why you were drawn to alcohol and drugs in the first place. An inquiry into your psyche is important. It can lead to a fuller understanding of yourself. This can help alleviate guilt, shame, depression, anger, and other feelings. If your feelings have gone numb, an inquiry is like pouring warm water on a pile of ice cubes. With the help of an addiction counselor, or therapist, self revelations can begin to flow.

Being in a rehab may be the first time you’ve ever had just for yourself. Think of it as a retreat, a long respite, and a hospital stay. Yes, hospital, because an addiction is serious and can be life threatening. You enter a rehab to save your life—all of it—body, mind and spirit. If you had serious physical pain, would you wait until the cold weather before seeking treatment? Do you see the point that October, any day or any month is the right time to give yourself a second chance for lasting recovery.

“The road to recovery will not always be easy, but I will take it one day at a time, focusing on the moments I’ve dreamed about for so long.”— Amanda Lindhout
