Being Single in Addiction Recovery Has Its Benefits

People can begin their recovery living alone, at college, with a spouse and kids at home, or any number of combinations. When you are single, there’s no one there to question whether you’ve had a drink today or not. Nor is anyone at home to encourage you to keep up the good work a day at a time. Yet, being single in recovery has distinct advantages.

Here’s a chance to get to know yourself better. Perhaps you’re the kind of person who looks outside themselves for happiness and fulfillment, but really, who doesn’t? Finding happiness is a question of balance. We do find pleasure and happiness in personal relationships, and, we need to have our most valuable relationship with ourselves. If we are constantly looking outside of ourselves, what or whom will be reflected back to us?

When we establish a strong and significant relationship with ourselves we are taking responsibility for our own happiness. It can feel really good as opposed to a codependent relationship in which you can give away your soul and get little to nothing in return.

Being single allows you to give full attention to your recovery. You can decide to attend as many meetings and therapy sessions as you deem necessary. Don’t mistake this notion for selfishness. There will be plenty of time to do for others once you are secure in your sobriety.

Who are you without a drink in your hand? Being single provides the space to explore your priorities, goals, fun time, creativity, and new endeavors. You can dip your toes in the water, wade, or plunge in if something feels like the right fit for you.

Many in recovery need to build their self-confidence. Figuring things out on your own can improve your confidence level. You also have the time to look deeply at your past behaviors, make amends and reap the rewards of change.

When you live alone you may be more apt to form closer relationships with others in the program. You can go out for that cup of coffee, you can join sober activity clubs and you can visit your family if that is the right choice for you and will not hinder your progress.

“Being alone is not synonymous with incompleteness. Having a partner is not a precondition for completeness.”―Khang Kijarro Nguyen
