Hiring People in Recovery

If you are searching for a new employee, why not consider hiring someone in recovery? Research shows, persons in recovery tend to be highly motivated and loyal employees because they need and want to stabilize their lives. Of course, he or she would have to meet the same requirements and qualifications as other applicants.

In addition to being hardworking, employees in recovery aren’t going to be partying or binge drinking over the weekend. Therefore, the employer may find them to be more productive than other employees because they are ready to dig in and focus Monday mornings. People in recovery are also shown to take fewer sick days. They have suffered from a terrible disease, and are more prone to value and take care of themselves.

Of particular consideration is the conduct of honesty, humility and integrity recovered persons are apt to display, especially if they have studied, worked and embraced the 12 Steps. The 12 Steps are guiding principles and suggested actions for addiction recovery. These are offered in AA and NA, and other recovery programs.

Giving people in recovery a chance may come with risks, so it is a good idea for employers to have written policies, and employee handbooks established in advance. This is not to discriminate, but rather to maintain the integrity of the business as needed when hiring any new employee.

If the hiree is new to recovery it is a good idea to require they have a certain amount of time behind them. Policies should include early intervention for employees with signs of drug use, alcoholism or other behavioral problems and concern. Return-to-work or contingency agreements need to be in place for relapse, and/or consequences due to unsatisfactory work performance. Training for executives and managers, not versed in addiction education, ought to be considered to ward off stigmatization.

When employers hire an individual in recovery, they are not only helping them, but society in general. In large companies, there is the chance that some of their other employees are anonymously in recovery. Knowing their company is open to hiring those with the same disease as them, can only boost their moral and further their work ethic.
